A Q&A with Dr. Hawthorne
Emergency

What are your key skills or background experience?
6 years of clinical practice primarily in emergency medicine
Completed a rotating internship at Michigan State University in 2020 and a surgical internship at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in 2021
Certified in RECOVER CPR
Do you have any clinical interests or medical topics that you would like to write about?
After my internships, I continued to pursue interests in emergency and critical care medicine, working as a traveling veterinarian in specialty hospitals across the country. During this time, I realized how emergency practitioners have the unique opportunity to bridge the gap between general practice and specialty care and provide advanced medicine to a great array of clientele.
I am currently working alongside a cohort of my professional colleagues to become a Board-Certified Veterinary Practitioner in Canine/Feline Practice with the intent to fill that gap in veterinary medicine. It is a 3-year program that I hope to follow up with a fellowship in Emergency Medicine. While pursuing this degree, I am also continuing to pursue advanced training in technical skills, including endoscopy and ultrasonography.
What are your unique abilities or passions?
I have a deep passion for patient care and client education, and counseling owners with difficult decisions. In the emergency room, each decision we make as doctors can have a lasting impact on our patients and their families. I truly value the trust owners place in me to care for their four-legged loved ones and take my position very seriously.
Additionally, my experiences as an intern shaped my outlook on the value of mentorship and cultivating a positive workplace environment that encourages personal and professional development for young doctors. Ultimately, I would like to apply my expertise and experience towards mentoring interns and young veterinarians in the future.
Discuss your personal background and fun facts.
Outside of veterinary medicine, I spend most of my time staying active and exploring outdoor spaces with my own dog, Dagwood. He's made it through veterinary school and traveled across the country with me. When it comes to a solid road trip companion, he's 10/10! We love exploring state parks when time permits.
I moved to the Dallas/Friso area to be closer to family. I'm proud to be the "fun aunt" for my niece and look forward to spending quality time with the people I care about!
